Optimized CMOS photodetector structures for the detection of green luminescent probes in biological applications

چکیده
Recent developments in lab-on-a-chip applications have increased the need for low-power, small-footprint photodetectors to detect luminescent reporters used to monitor biological events. Presented is a CMOS photodiode structure that is optimized to detect green light, the peak emission wavelength of commonly used fluorophores and other luminescent probes. The photodiode geometry uses a lightly doped striped cathode geometry to maximize the depletion region in areas of highest light absorbance, increasing the sensitivity to green light. The devices, realized in 1.5 m CMOS technology, have up to a 63% increased signal-to-noise response for green light compared to blue-enhanced CMOS photodiode structures. These devices also generate an output 4.5 times larger than conventional CMOS detectors for detecting fluorescent emissions from a 1 M fluorescein solution. The devices are designed to be integrated in total analysis systems which rely on the detection of fluorecent or phosphorescent reporters, and which are compact, low-power, and low-cost. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. The inclusion of cameras in everything from cell phones to pens to children’s’ toys is possible because of the low cost and low power consumption of the imaging arrays that form the core of the cameras. However, these arrays are low cost and low power because they are CMOS-based; this allows for the devices to be made with the same processes and facilities that are used to make memory and compu...
متن کاملModeling and simulation of luminescence detection platforms.
Motivated by the design of an integrated CMOS-based detection platform, a simulation model for CCD and CMOS imager-based luminescence detection systems is developed. The model comprises four parts. The first portion models the process of photon flux generation from luminescence probes using ATP-based and luciferase label-based assay kinetics. An optics simulator is then used to compute the inci...
متن کاملModeling and Simulation of Integrated Luminescence Detection Platforms
We developed a simulation model of an integrated CMOS-based imaging platform for use with bioluminescent DNA microarrays. We formulate the complete kinetic model of ATP based assays and luciferase label-based assays. The model first calculates the number of photons generated per unit time, i.e., photon flux, based upon the kinetics of the light generation process of luminescence probes. The pho...
متن کاملA fully-integrated 12.5-Gb/s 850-nm CMOS optical receiver based on a spatially-modulated avalanche photodetector.
We present a fully integrated 12.5-Gb/s optical receiver fabricated with standard 0.13-µm complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technology for 850-nm optical interconnect applications. Our integrated optical receiver includes a newly proposed CMOS-compatible spatially-modulated avalanche photodetector, which provides larger photodetection bandwidth than previously reported CMOS-compati...
متن کاملDesign of Optimized Quantum-dot Cellular Automata RS Flip Flops
Complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology has been the industry standard to implement Very Large Scale Integrated (VLSI) devices for the last two decades. Due to the consequences of miniaturization of such devices (i.e. increasing switching speeds, increasing complexity and decreasing power consumption), it is essential to replace them with a new technology. Quantum-dot c...
